Problems, solutions and innovations
With a growing popoulation comes guaranteed problems, especially in large urban areas. Mumbai's increasing population is causing major problems such as pollution, slum overpopulation and traffic congestion. Some of these issues are being dealt with by the govenment and some not so much so.
PROBLEM: OVER POPULATED SLUMS
Slums in Mumbai are the result of rapid migration movement from rual areas. As Mumbai developed economically, job opportunities and education opportunities became available. But yet when people migrated they found themselves in a harder position as limited housing and facilities were available to house a fast-growing population. Over 60% of the population live in slums and makeshift houses today.
SOLUTION:
A solution would be to replace the slums with apartment blocks and shopping centres to house the slum dwellers. This would improve sanitation and saftey problems and build a sustainable future for those previously living in the slums. This idea is being made possible by the Slum rehabilitation authority and plans are going ahead to give residents 220 square feet apartments to replace their homes; giving 65% of the apartments to slum residents and the rest for commercial use.
PROBLEM: POLLUTION
Pollution in Mumbai comes from several sources, all a result of over urbanisation. They include construction activity, for example paved and unpaved dust is responsible for 38% of the pollution. Power plants are the second source of pollution - 21% of all air pollution comes from power plants while landfill burning causes 11%. Final vehiclels, particularly heavy trucks contribute 3.42%. Domestically, 451 vehicles a registered in Mumbai every day.
SOLUTION:
A solution would be to encourage walking and bike riding around the city, developing bike lanes and improved foot paths would emphasise this. The introduction of a monorail would improve public transport. The monorail is free of air ands noise pollution. And also save all the fuel needed for private and public transport. Building a bridge over the Arabian sea will reduce travelling time over the Arabian sea and ease Mumbai's traffic congestion.
(There was another point on Traffic congestion but weebly has not saved it)
