Population Characteristics
Mumbai is one of the largest, most populated cities in the world, the city has grown rapidly in the last twenty years, majority of this rise in population is migrants in search of a better life, such as better employment opportunities, housing and improved facilities . A large amount of Mumbai's migrant population live in slums, as they have little money upon arival in Mumbai. This has caused alarming heath hazards to the government, as the slum population rises and city pollution accumulates.
The population density of Mumbai is 20,482 people per square kilometre this has quickly grown in the last twenty years. A 1991 census stated that the population was 9 million, since then the city has grown to a massive 14 million and growing.
MIGRANT WORKERS
Nearly 70% of migrants have moved from the rural areas of Maharashtra itself, they come from all over India to Mumbai as it is situated in a richer state. Migrants also come from other states such as Ihar, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa to seek jobs and other services. But a recent studies have shown that Migrants do not come for jobs, but in particular for marriage. For instance, over 538 per 1,000 migrants in Maharashtra, (particularly women) have moved to Mumbai for marriage.
Employment opportunities are on the decline also, shrinking form 40% in 1961 to 20% in 2001.

Bombay's terrain is made up of low lying land, 1/4 of which is below sea level. Marlabar hill is Mumbai's highest point reaching 55 meters above sea level.
